We’re confirmed fans of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami; it’s our go-to stop whenever we’re in that part of the Sunshine State. Now, the Mid-Atlantic can get a taste of what makes Mandarin’s way of guest pampering so special with the opening of the Mandarin Oriental Washington, D.C. Like all the properties in the elite chain (the Mandarin in New York’s Time Warner Center is the other newcomer), the emphasis is on gracious, sincere service steeped in the values of the exotic Orient.

Perfect for a weekend getaway, the D.C. outpost offers 16 different types of rooms and suites to choose from, with views of the Tidal Basin, the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument. The rooms have a serene, residential feel, with a decor that marries quiet Asian elegance with traditional touches and a soothing color palette of burnt orange and pale greens. Mandarin describes its service as “Subtle. Discreet. Observant,” and that reflects its Oriental origins. Turndown service includes Voss mineral water and an orchid; two complimentary newspapers arrive at your door each morning, and housekeeping is twice daily.

The 14,000-square-foot spa includes amethyst steam rooms, “experience showers,” a vitality pool and ice fountain for women, and a sauna and cold plunge pool for men. The fitness center is open seven days a week, and the 50-foot indoor swimming pool affords dramatic views of the Potomac waterfront. Dining options include the formal CityZen, with a menu by chef Eric Ziebold and a dramatic 30-foot wall of flames behind the bar; Cafe MoZU, with its Asianinspired menu and afternoon tea; and the Empress Lounge, with windows overlooking the tranquil Asian gardens. 1330 Maryland Ave., S.W., Washington, D.C., 202-554-8588
