Ten years after The Color Purple first graced the stage at the Broadway Theatre, the musical adaptation of author Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel returns with an all-star cast. Director John Doyle, whose minimalist interpretation of the show received rave reviews in London, has tapped Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson to play Shug Avery and rising star Danielle Brooks (aka Taystee on “Orange is the New Black”) to play Sofia alongside British stage idol Cynthia Erivo, who will reprise her tole as Celie. With descriptions like “heartbreaking” and “muscular” coming from across the pond—and a chilling video of Hudson performing “Too Beautiful for Words” that surfaced online back in June—we can only assume that whatever Doyle has done with the script is gold. Previews begin this month with the opening date set for Dec. 10 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. While you’re in town, stop by Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen, the new restaurant by the former Maryland-based caterer and two-time Top Chef, for some soul food that would surely pass old Shug’s test. colorpurple.com
