When the excitement of Black Friday’s big deals subsides, Green Spring Station’s Mikey Monaghan and the rest of Baltimore’s local merchants want you to think small. Nov. 28 is Small Business Saturday, created by American Express to encourage spending with establishments owned by people in the community. “Shopping local gives you the opportunity to shop directly with the business owner and support your community,” Monaghan explains. Below, our how-to guide to spend the day spending locally.

Green Spring Station

Baltimore’s largest indie-only shopping center will offer a $25 gift card to your favorite GSS store or restaurant when you spend $150 or more at any of its retailers. Additionally, several GSS stores will feature special promotions. At Matava Shoes, take 20 percent off all Lysse Leggings and handbags or 30 percent off Frye shoes and other select items. Yves Delorme slashes 20 percent off everything, excluding furniture. Over at Becket Hitch, you can sip on hot cider or White Whale mixers while snacking on light fare; the home décor store also will host a J.Q. Dickinson Salt Works pop-up shop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and offer Daniel Wellington watches at 25 percent off.

Federal Hill

The historic city district’s Brightside Boutique invites you to take 25 percent off everything — yes, that includes House of Harlow necklaces — plus enjoy spiked cider. Meanwhile, Pandora’s Box promises snacks, wine, discounts and raffles throughout the day. Not forgetting the American Visionary Art Museum’s Bazaart, a holiday art market featuring unique artisan goods from regional makers. Stroll around: The neighborhood brims with myriad small, funky shopping and dining opportunities.

Fells Point

Several Black Friday deals extend into Saturday at The Sound Garden, the city’s go-to independent record shop (also check out its new DVD and book releases). Small Business Saturday celebrates not just boutiques but all independently owned local businesses. Fells Point has great eateries, including Lobo’s Fells Point, Thames Street Oyster House, and noted breakfast spot Blue Moon Café.

Ellicott City Main Street

Howard County’s quaint and lovely Ellicott City is home to great boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and historic sites. In addition to its epic holiday window display, the women’s apparel and home goods shop Sweet Elizabeth Jane will offer a special gift to the first 150 customers. No worries if you don’t make the cut, the boutique will also offer $5 gift certificates with every purchase, a hot chocolate bar and day-only deals for everyone to enjoy. Nearby, you’ll find Perspective’s Art Gallery, The Wine Bin and fandom paradise All Time ToysIf you shop up an appetite, satisfy your hungries at CaCao Lane, The Pure Wine Café and the cozy coffee shop the Bean Hollow.
