Kick off the week in the kickiest way imaginable–go out tonight. Starts Heres! novelist Jen Michalski’s ongoing reading series, in collaboration with the Ivy Bookshop, starts at 7 p.m.

At Artifact Coffee: 1500 Union Ave.

AND our own Melissa Gerr–digital media editor, managing editor and senior reporter at Mid-Atlantic Media–joins D.C.-based fiction writer Amber Sparks, who recently published the story collection The Unfinished World and Other Stories (Liveright) and the edgy millennial poet Tracy Dimond, whose work is featured in our January issue of STYLE, in the literary line-up.

What will Gerr read?

“The one I know for sure details the arc of communications technology my 86-year-old mother has triumphed over (most of the time) and how that has helped shape our relationship over the years,” she says.

Gerr moved to Baltimore from Portland, Or., in 2007. She’s originally from Minnesota.

“Getting to know Baltimore has been like learning the eccentricities of a good friend that I want to hold dear for a long time,” Gerr says. “I became acquainted with the city and its dwellers while riding the bus for a year when I first arrived, and I’ve been smitten since. Writing for JT and STYLE allows me to poke around places and meet new people doing cool stuff, who continually reveal themselves in all corners of the city.”

She recently published an article in City Paper called “Sugar Mountain: The Night Shift at Domino Sugar” and for STYLE she wrote “The Sky’s the Limit” about local female pilots and “Block Party,” a behind the scenes tour with WYPR’s “Out of the Blocks” creators, Aaron Henkin and Wendell Patrick.
