MEET THE STAFF

Editor-in-Chief Betsy Boyd is a fiction writer, journalist and copywriter. Betsy spent more than a decade as a contributor to Daily Variety; she also served as senior editor of Baltimore’s PaperDoll Magazine and of the news and entertainment site Baltimore Fishbowl, both published by Susan Dunn. A regular blogger for the Huffington Post, she is the literary editor of Baltimore Fishbowl, where she assigns and edits monthly memoir essays. She is the recipient of a Maryland State Arts Council award, an Elliot Coleman Writing Fellowship, a James A. Michener Fellowship and residencies through Fundación Valparaíso, the Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program for Artists and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts. Betsy’s fiction has been published most recently in Sententia, Shenandoah, Eclectica and Loch Raven Review. Her short story “Scarecrow” received a Pushcart Prize. She is a faculty member in the Creative Writing and Publishing Arts MFA program at the University of Baltimore.

Kim Van Dyke, creative director of STYLE, holds a B.S. in advertising design from the University of Maryland, and a M.A. in publication design from the University of Baltimore. She was previously art/creative director for Chesapeake Life, Lehigh Valley Style and Susquehanna Style magazine. She has received many awards for her design work, including an art direction award from the Illustrators Club of MD, DC, VA; first place in special purpose publications from the Press Association Affiliate; and an Award of Excellence from the Art Director’s Club of Metropolitan Washington, D,C. The International Regional Magazine Association has also awarded her best art direction of a regional magazine. Kim serves on the board of directors for the Crownsville Conservancy and her community association. She lives with her husband, two daughters and two dogs.

Hannah Monicken, staff writer, is a transplant to the Baltimore area from her home state of North Dakota. In recent years, she has worked as a newspaper reporter, congressional campaign communications director and freelance writer. A Macalester College graduate, where she majored in political science and minored in media studies and (nerd alert!) mathematics, she is excited to join the STYLE team and explore the unique personality of Charm City. When not working, she can be found reading, running, traveling and unabashedly letting Netflix enable all her guilty pleasures.

A longtime journalist, Michael Yockel–freelance senior editor–has spent the bulk of his career as a writer and editor with the alternative press, including stints as editor of Baltimore City Paper, associate editor of Miami New Times and frequent contributor to New York Press, where he wrote, among many other things, a weekly column called “Obituary.” Locally, he has worked as a freelance writer for Baltimore magazine, various Johns Hopkins University-affiliated magazines and STYLE.

Staff writer Kimberly Uslin graduated from Washington College in 2014, where she earned a B.A. in English and Creative Writing and was a finalist for the Sophie Kerr Prize, the nation’s largest undergraduate literary award. After graduation, she attended the three-month Columbia Publishing Course at Columbia University, and has worked in various facets of publishing since: as a journalist for a small-town newspaper, in advertising and marketing at Girls’ Life magazine (where she also served as an online editor and staff writer), and as a fiction and poetry screener for Cherry Tree literary magazine. When she’s not reading, writing or editing, she enjoys attending all sorts of festivals, lectures and performances around Baltimore and hanging out with her fat cat, Tito.

CONTRIBUTING EDITORS

Martha Thomas, food editor, has had a long and varied career as a writer and editor. She grew up in New Hampshire and came to Baltimore in 2000 after living in Minneapolis and New York City. In Maryland, she has been a freelance writer, regularly contributing food features and reviews to such local publications as The Washington Post, City Paper, Urbanite and of course, Baltimore Style. Her work has also appeared in regional and national magazines including Architectural Digest, TimeOut New York, Travel & Leisure and AARP. She is a freelance copy editor for the World Wildlife Fund and is publications editor for the Baltimore Symphony.

A writing instructor at the University of Maryland, College Park, Martha recently launched a new course, Writing about Food, to examine and practice various genres of food writing, exploring how food is intricately woven into leisure, culture and society.
