Though the record-high temperatures may make it hard to believe, summer is coming to an end in Charm City. And while there is a lot to be excited about when the seasons change, it can be difficult to say goodbye to the ease of swimsuits, sandals and that pretty sunny glow. What’s also not easy? Dressing for the tricky transitional time. And despite the fact that it would look a little funky to don a floral sundress as the leaves turn colors, not all of your summer favorites have to go into storage when the seasons change.
To me, the key to bringing the fall fun while extending the life of my summer clothes is threefold: scarves, jackets and sneakers.
Want to take a little walk around the neighborhood to appreciate the cooler weather? Transitioning a simple summer tee or tank is as easy as adding a scarf (like this adorable option from Rag & Bone) and, depending on the chill factor, a cardigan and some jeans. (I recommend simple flats so you can hear the crunch of the leaves!)
Jackets
If you’re stepping outside to have a little Friday night fun and feel a slight chill in the air, don’t panic: It’s time to bring our your most fabulous fall jacket (I love this suede one from BlankNYC, which brings a little edge to any outfit). The jacket screams fall fashion, but a light summer t-shirt dress keeps the ensemble from being too heavy.
Sneakers
I know, I know: You were expecting booties. But not only are they an obvious option, they can be a bit of a pain. Maybe you’re doing a little shopping downtown—building up your fall wardrobe, perhaps?—and are spending some serious time in tiny boutique fitting rooms. (If there’s something I hate more than algebra, it’s an unforgiving fitting room.) The perfect summer-t0-fall ensemble? An easy-to-pull-off dress, light jacket, and Vans that bring the cute in comfort. These high-tops are comfortable, cool and multi-purpose, bringing a touch of tough-girl.
With these three accessories at the ready, you’re prepped for everything from the boardroom to the tailgate. Oh, and never forget my favorite accessory: a warm cup of coffee—maybe in a tumbler that matches your outfit? Happy fall, y’all!
