Mobile on road

NPR fans, rejoice—a little bit of “Morning Edition” is coming to Charm City! StoryCorps, an independent nonprofit and popular segment of the show, will bring its MobileBooth to Baltimore on May 19. Founded with the aim of collecting and sharing the diverse American experience, StoryCorps seeks to record the oral history of everyday citizens through interviews between friends, family members and people brought together in unexpected ways—and now, you could be part of it.

If you’ve ever listened, you’ve undoubtedly heard about the roving MobileBooth, which travels around the country collecting stories. For the next four weeks, the booth (which is actually an Airstream trailer outfitted with a recording studio) will be parked at MICA’s Cohen Plaza—so if you’re feeling bold, sign up to interview your great-grandmother, the 3rd grade teacher that changed your life or even your best friend. (Local NPR station WYPR has partnered with StoryCorps to create special programming using the interviews, so you may even hear yourself on the radio!)

Even if you don’t personally have a story in mind to share, the initiative offers an amazing opportunity for Baltimoreans to be heard on the national stage. Excerpts from interviews will have the chance to join the StoryCorps oeuvre of NPR broadcasts, animated shorts, digital features and themed books (and, to be honest, this writer’s teary commutes).

The local portion of the program kicks off with interviews of Baltimore-based writer Laura Lippman and Loyola professor Dr. Karsonya Wise Whitehead on May 19 and will remain in the city until June 17. To participate, call 1-800-850-4406 to make a reservation or visit storycorps.org.
