Lecture: American Identity in the Age of Trump
March 31 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
Annapolis, Md.— Lydia Polgreen, editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post and St. John’s College alumna, will present the Annual Andrew Steiner Lecture entitled “American Identity in the Age of Trump” at St. John’s College. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Friday, March 31, at 8 p.m.
“I feel like we’re living in a moment right now where media has to fundamentally rethink its position vis-a-vis power,” Polgreen said in a December 2016 interview with The Huffington Post. “I think that the election of Donald Trump and the basic difficulty that the media had in anticipating it tells us something really profound about the echo chamber in which we live, the ways in which journalism has failed to reach beyond its own inner limits.”
Before becoming the editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post, Polgreen served as the editorial director of NYT Global at the New York Times, and the West Africa bureau chief for the same publication, based in Dakar, Senegal, from 2005-2009. She has won many awards, including the Livingston Award in 2009. As a journalist, she has also reported from India and was based in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she was the New York Times Johannesburg bureau chief. Polgreen graduated from St. John’s College in Annapolis in 1997.
